As promised, if anyone's remotely interested, I have taken a representative sampling from one day of my daily work log for this week and "anonymized" it a bit, suitable to Internet posting.
In case you're not remotely interested, I've put it in the extended post body. :)
This is the kind of stuff I have to do on a daily basis, complete with interruptions like phone calls and walk-ins who talk to me. Some people come by and don't interrupt my train of thought, so I didn't record any of them. The list, for Thursday, 5/13/04:
-Check voice mail - one hang-up
-Check e-mail - mailbox full, create new folder to store messages temporarily that need to be saved
-Call for CoWorkerE from Jonesey (electrical contractor)
-Make coffee
-BossMan’s assistant called for BossMan - notify him to pick up line
-SurveyorGuy looking for Architect#1 - not here yet
-Continue (from yesterday) linking Potential Change Order (PCO) backup to WebBasedSystem records
-Jonesey arrived to walk with CoWorkerE
-Architect#1 arrived, notified him that SurveyorGuy was looking for him
-CoWorkerK called for BossMan - on phone, take message & deliver to office
-HardHatGuy#1 brought over PCO backup. Copy transmittal for each PCO, scan and deliver to CoWorkerA (22 pages - 4 PCOs)
-BossMan’s assistant called for BossMan - on phone - take message & deliver to office
-Continue linking PCO backup to WebBasedSystem records - through #613
-HardHatGuy#1 asked for PCO backup that he had just given me to review with BossMan - told him CoWorkerA had them
-Finalize weekly progress meeting notes from Tuesday (BossMan was reviewing on Wednesday)
-HardHatGuy#2 came in looking for CoWorkerE - told him CoWorkerE was out in the field with Jonesey
-HardHatGuy#2 called asking for CoWorkerE's mobile number (heard it ring in his office a minute later)
-Scan attachments for meeting notes (44 pages - 10 files), upload and link to WebBasedSystem record, send out via WebBasedSystem e-mail
-E-mail submittal register and Notice To Comply list to CoWorkerE separately
-Talk to BossMan about helping CoWorkerA with PCO’s and status of first completed building closeout manuals
-E-mail HardHatGuy#3 regarding first completed building closeout manuals
-Continue linking PCO backup to WebBasedSystem records
-Phone call - recording/telemarketer
-Phone call - recording/telemarketer
-Talk to CoWorkerA re: specific instructions for helping her with PCOs
-Print PCO and Request For Information backup for 3 new PCOs received, transmit via fax to architect’s office
-Finish linking PCO backup to WebBasedSystem records (done 10:58 AM)
-Coffee service delivery lady arrived to deliver coffee and clean equipment
-BossMan’s assistant called for BossMan - notify him that she is holding
-File light fixture cut sheet CoWorkerE gave me
-Date stamp & code invoice for coffee, give to BossMan for signature
-Phone call - hangup
-Copy coffee invoice, put in interoffice envelope for accounting, enter amount in budget spreadsheet
-Same salesman (annoying people on site yesterday) arrived with samples, looking for Architect#2 (talked to CoWorkerA)
-HardHatGuy#4 brought over photo CD. Talk about the fact that she forgot to label the specific views - not really a problem. Date stamp transmittal. Copy files to hard drive.
-Salesman asked who at the architect’s office is in charge of colors - told him to check with Architect#2. Salesman chatted about weather.
-Burn 2 copies of photo CD - one for CityOfWhatever Marketing person, one for CM#1 Marketing person
-HardHatGuy#1 brought over new PCO backup (2 PCOs), date stamp, copy transmittal for each PCO, scan backup, log date and action in WebBasedSystem, print PCO and RFI for each, transmit via fax to Architect, give originals to CoWorkerA
-E-mail CityOfWhatever Marketing person that new photo CD is ready
-Transfer uploaded meeting minutes attachments & RFI backup to "To File" folder
-Create PDF files of PCO-related e-mail (314 items to start)
-Fax received - CoWorkerA's AmEx statement - set aside to code later
-Scan new PCO backup - CoWorkerA already took care of other tasks on this one
-Continue creating PDFs of PCO e-mails
-BossMan asked where CoWorkerE was - assume at lunch. Talk about menu at nearby cafeteria. BossMan went to see HardHatGuys.
-CityInspector#2 asked where CityInspector#1 was - confirmed I have seen him today, just don't know where he currently is
-BossMan returned from HardHatGuys with advance copy of critical needs list (usually received on Monday afternoons) - date stamp, fax to architects, copy for CoWorkerA and CoWorkerE.
-Continue creating PDFs of PCO e-mails
-Phone call - recording/telemarketer
-Call from CityOfWhatever Marketing person - schedule site tour for graphic design group - put on Outlook calendar and desk calendar
-Courier delivery from architects - date stamp returned submittal
-Continue creating PDFs of PCO e-mails - 208 items remaining at 1:20 PM
BREAK: 1:20 PM - 1:45 PM
-Process returned submittal from architects
-Show CityOfWhatever maintenance guy how to use copy machine
-HardHatGuy#3 brought over 2 new submittals - date stamp and process
-Continue creating PDFs of PCO e-mails
-Chat with HardHatGuy#1 about how the diet is going
-Help CoWorkerE clear paper jam
-Phone call - recording/telemarketer
-Ate lunch while continuing to create PDFs
-Architect Jr. called for BossMan.

-Clear another paper jam for CoWorkerE
-3 CityOfWhatever staff arrived for tour with opening celebration committee... answer question about leaving purses here
-Respond to e-mail from BossMan’s assistant regarding a quality work group on standardizing the subconsultant agreement

-Deliver copies left on copier to CoWorkerE and CoWorkerA
-CoWorkerJ called for CoWorkerA
-Continue creating PDF's of PCO e-mails - 60 items remaining at 4:15 PM
-Print new submittal log - error while printing, had to reconnect to WebBasedSystem. Clear paper jam while first partial page printed.
-Print new submittal log, mark up past due/nearly due/hot items, highlight MS Word copy of log and e-mail to Architects
-Continue creating PDF's of PCO e-mails
-CoWorkerK calling for BossMan - meeting with CoWorkerE, let her know he'll call her back
-CoWorkerK calling for BossMan again - re: deadline on another project - let BossMan know she's on hold
