A year ago today, I had deep thoughts bouncing around in my head, and a burning desire to share them. I'd heard of weblogs before, and knew a couple of people who had LiveJournals, but only had seen one weblog before I decided to start my own.
I'd done a paper newsletter for my friends several years ago, and a few years later I'd done a webpage "newsletter" to keep my friends and family updated about what was going on in my life... both were entitled "News from the Great Beyond", so my new blog used the same name.
One year ago today, I made my first post welcoming friends and family (and random passers-by)... I wasn't sure if I would stick with blogging, or what kind of things I'd end up writing about. My second post was a rambling missive about gay marriage and Mel Gibson's Passion of the Christ - deep subjects to start my blogging career. But over the next few days, my penchant for ranting and opining on a wide variety of topics became clear. I covered baseball's steroid scandal, then jumped to a work-related rant, followed by "too much information" about bladder infections, and chattering about The Apprentice.
Before long I was surfing other weblogs, compiling a blogroll and making new friends. I became obsessed with my stats. I ran across the King of the Blogs tournament and, having only been blogging for less than two months, I entered. The good judges - especially Harvey - helped shape my taste over time. After a year, I feel almost like a veteran blogger.
The promised new design in honor of our first blogiversary is still under construction - it's close to done, though, so we hope to have it up by the weekend. Until then, well... patience is a virtue.
Enough shameless self-promotion - it's your turn to shower me with links and flattery and congratulations, right?
