I figure after nearly 33 years of being in church at least twice a week, plus 10 years of Christian school, plus 4 years of weekly college Baptist Student Union meetings, and miscellaneous conferences and seminars and retreats, I've heard somewhere in the neighborhood of 5,000 sermons and Biblical teachings.
It's pretty rare these days that I hear something that catches my attention, that's something I didn't already know or understand on some level. That's not to say that I don't want to (or need to) hear things repeated over and over to get them into my spirit - it's a tremendous benefit. I can't just read the Bible all the way through one time and "get it", and never need to read it again.
But Sunday morning, I heard a sermon that gripped me, that looked at a familiar passage of scripture in a way I'd never heard before, and I was totally excited. We had a special guest, Pastor and Psalmist Steve Fry... I enjoyed the music, but even more, I enjoyed the teaching. So much that I bought one of his books, which is also pretty rare for me.
I will attempt to summarize Steve's message here. I hope to do it justice. If you have any interest in obtaining a recording of his sermon after reading my summary, please e-mail our church receptionist to ask how to get a copy sent to you. Won't she be surprised to get e-mail from all over the darn place *grin*..
