A group of Christian bloggers has committed to 40 days of non-partisan prayer for our country and the upcoming elections... If you would like to join in the effort, even if you don't have your own weblog (those of us who do will post your prayer for you), see Bryan at Spare Change.
Our Heavenly Father,
I come before You today in prayer for the senior citizens of this great nation. Lord, You know the hearts of each and every one of them, and You know the needs they have. Father, I pray that these precious members of our society would learn to turn to You as their source, for You are the all-sufficient one, and You alone can provide all of their needs.
Father, I ask that in these days leading up to the election, that all candidates running for public office would show respect and concern for the senior citizens of this country, and that they would refrain from using the elders in our society as pawns for political gain. God, I ask that the scare tactics would cease. Lord, let both Senator Kerry and President Bush make their positions clear on issues affecting senior citizens without resorting to accusations that would cause fear or panic.
Finally, Lord, I ask that we members of younger generations would learn to show love and respect for our elders, and that Your children all over this land would rise up to care for the needs of senior citizens in our community. Lord, teach us to show Your love to our neighbors. Give us a heart of compassion, and a desire to reach out to those who have little or no family. Let us realize that the elderly among us have great wisdom to be shared, and let us humble ourselves to learn from them.
In Jesus' name I ask these things.... Amen.
